What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary contact healthcare discipline that places its emphasis on the examination, diagnosis and management of problems and/or conditions that can affect the spine, nervous system, muscles or extremity joints of the body (Neuro-musculo-skeletal system).

Most people associate chiropractic care with just the treatment of back pain, neck pain and headaches. We go further than that and our Chiropractors take into consideration your overall health status before embarking on a treatment programme, in co-operation with you, the patient.

Our fully qualified Chiropractors commonly see patients with:

• Back or neck pain
• Migraine headaches
• Sporting & accidental injuries
• Whiplash related problems
• Work related aches and pains
• Limb pain, numbness and tingling
• Arthritic and other joint problems

Chiropractors use their professional skill to diagnose and treat conditions which result from irritation of the nerves and muscles that control our posture and movement. Irritation is caused by dysfunction of our joints where at first inflammation and muscular contraction, then later ligament shortening results in reduced mobility and then secondary pain in neighbouring compensating joints. This muscular contraction or joint sprain can have many causes including accident, poor diet, repetitive strain, lack of exercise, poor posture and anxiety. The irritation of nerves in one area can cause referred symptoms in other areas of the body.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractors do not use drugs or surgery but amongst the various treatments they employ the most important part which is Specific Chiropractic Manipulation - this is the use of their hands to improve mobility by manipulating and adjusting joints. This manipulation stimulates the body’s position sensors (proprioceptors) which provide the brain with feedback on positioning of the joint. The stimulation caused by manipulation also stretches the joint capsule and ligaments of the restricted joint leaving the joint more supple, functioning better, thereby reducing the secondary irritation and pain.

Qualified Chiropractors Bristol and Chiropractors Bath

It takes at least four years of full-time undergraduate study to become a chiropractor. In the UK this takes place at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic (AECC) affiliated to Bournemouth University, or the Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIOC) at Glamorgan University. After successful completion of either an MSc or MChiro (Master of Chiropractic) degree, chiropractors can then undertake a further year training in the form of the College of Chiropractors PRT scheme providing postgraduate training in chiropractic. All our chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and members of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) the largest association for the profession in the UK, established since 1925. Only chiropractors fully trained at accredited institutions can become members of the British Chiropractic Association (BCA). All of our Chiropractors Bristol and Chiropractors Bath are fully qualified and trained to take and interpret x-rays where the clinical need arises.

How Will Chiropractic Treatment Benefit You?

People from all walks of life and of all ages can benefit from chiropractic care, right through adulthood and into later years. We treat everyone from sedentary desk bound individuals to high level athletes. Using a variety of manipulative techniques designed to improve the function of joints and reduce muscle spasm, our qualified Chiropractors in our Bristol and Bath Chiropractor clinics help to relieve the particular stresses that are causing a condition to occur in the first place, which ultimately leads to pain reduction and improved functional capacity.

Is Chiropractic treatment safe?

Even if I've already had surgery? Chiropractic is remarkably safe when treatment is carried out by a properly qualified Chiropractor. Your chiropractor is trained to recognise conditions which require referral elsewhere, and can treat you even after surgery.
